My concentration is inspired by films that have made an impact on me because of the style, theme, or characters in the film. Through the use of makeup and costumes, I have translated these styles and emotions into my work. I chose to use movies that focus on the dark side of human nature, have an alienated character, and a style unique from mainstream movies. For example, I chose Donnie Darko and Black Swan, because I related to the main characters because of their weirdness and differentness.

          My photos are organized in order of light to dark, literally and figuratively, symbolizing the themes, styles, and emotion becoming darker. I hope to take the viewer on a journey through the worlds of the films I’ve chosen, while also recreating the feelings from these movies. Starting with fantasy in image 1, the Mad Hatter from Alice in Wonderland, I admired the theme that it is okay to be unusual and weird and that it should be embraced. There is beauty in madness which I wanted to show through the Mad Hatter. Continuing with the theme of madness and evil, images 4-7 portray societies devoid of rules that result in the characters terrorizing the streets and causing chaos, which depicts primal instincts. My final images delve into the void of alienation, insanity and surrealism. In image 8, Black Swan, I felt connected to Nina’s intrinsic drive towards perfection that becomes an obsession, which I believe mirrors my dedication and drive towards photography and films. Images 9-12 are up close and personal to juxtapose the characters’ isolation from society and are placed in bare environments to highlight their internal struggle with reality. I want my photos to capture the essence of the films while also being a representation of fantasy, alienation, and madness in humanity.
