Photography
I use photography as a way of exploring myself and expressing myself by capturing and conveying intimate thoughts and emotions that I usually hide. Photography is a way of showing people how I feel and my views on society, culture, and life. I enjoy making art that tells a story and can be ambiguous and interpreted in different ways depending on the background of the viewer.
Over the years I've grown to focus my interests on emotions and different ways of portraying them through photography. I enjoy exploring darker themes such as alienation, depression, anxiety, madness, and surrealism, as I am fascinated by the darker side of human nature. To delve into these made-up worlds of photography gives me a release from the stress and anxiety of the real world.
I find it easier to use self portraits to express myself than using models because being alone with a camera lets me lose myself in my work. Normally when I am in front of a camera in public, I am shy and uncomfortable; however, I am empowered through taking personal and closeup photos of myself, which reflects how I am more confident in private.
Self portraiture is a cathartic experience. Frequently my most successful and powerful work comes from photo shoots that I conduct on a stressful day, on a day that I feel lost in the world, or on a day where I feel consumed by anxiety and depression. After these shoots, I feel more complete and lighter, as if all the negativity has come out through the photos and is no longer attached to me.
I hope that my audience can connect to my work; either relating to it, sharing the experience of it, or developing an understanding of the meaning behind it.
